Patient Care Technicians: Work Environment and Salary Levels

One way you can get involved in the medical field, earn a living and gain some valuable experience all at the same time is by working as a patient care technician. It may be a fairly entry level job but working in this type of position can give you the opportunity to advance to more sophisticated and better paid positions within the medical field.

As you may know, a patient care technician works in a hospital, clinic or lab environment. Since patients are typically aren’t in the hospital because they are healthy patient care techs work with sick and injured folks on a regular basis helping them to get around and taking vital stats. They may also administer medications or do other tasks that are better done by someone in their position rather than a doctor or nurse with a full schedule of pressing matters to attend to.

In terms of compensation patient care technician salary levels generally start at about eight and a half dollars per hour but can reach as much as sixteen and a half per hour. The level you will be paid if you decide to work in this field does vary based on the location you will be working at and your level of experience.

Even if you want to end up somewhere else in the medical field in the long term you may want to consider working as a patient care technician for a time since the entry requirements are not as high as for other areas of the medical sector and you can gain experience while getting paid. If you are able to find some type of internship or apprentice program for this line of work that could be a major benefit as well.

You might want to keep personality type in mind when you think about working as a patient care assistant. Depending on what your personality is like you may or may not do well in this profession so you might want to discuss the matter with some people who have experience in the field to find out if you are a good match or if you should pursue a different course.
